Description

Kamweti Forest is a 4,000-hectare indigenous forest situated in Krinyaga County on the slopes of Mt Kenya. It is one of the oldest and most biodiverse forests in Kenya and is home to numerous plant and animal species. The history of Kamweti Forest dates back to the 19th century when the Maasai people used it as a grazing area. In the early 20th century, the British colonial government declared the forest a Crown Forest Reserve. In the 1950s, the forest was leased to a private company for timber harvesting. However, the company’s operations were suspended in the 1970s due to environmental concerns.

Since the 1970s, Kamweti Forest has been managed by the Kenya Forest Service. The forest is now a popular destination for hiking, camping, and bird watching. It is also an important source of water for the surrounding communities.
